Letter to Future Self - from 2014 to 2017

Albany Junior & Senior High School Year 10 English class - 2014 It was a lifetime ago, well three years to be precise. As I had the privilege of teaching the extension English class for two years, I decided to mix it up and offer them an alternative activity. It was the year 2014 - Valentine's Day, a day of arohanui, love, and an opportunity to consider loving your future self. Rather than the time capsules we had created the year before, I invited them to write a letter to their future self, to be opened in 2017 - their final year of high school - Albany Senior High. The instructions for 'Letter to Future Self' Fast forward to Spring 2017, time for new life, new hope, and a special delivery...time to deliver the promise I made to my then Year 10s. Our Past, Present and Future I keep pinching myself - this must be a dream. I feel like I am in my dream job - a job where it doesn't feel like work, and now I can fully appreciate Mark Twain's quote about finding a job you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life". I am being fed - I feel like everyday is the best PLD ever. I am learning more every day, realising just how much we don't know what we don't know! As I am working with Core colleagues, schools, leaders, learners and educators to empower and transform them, I am humbled and excited by their passion, dedication and vision - with the ākonga at the centre. To Infinity & Beyond...

Until your plan(e)'s grounded... What do you do when you are presenting at a conference and your flights are cancelled? Up until April this year, I have never had to really consider this possibility. Last year, Lachie, Martin and I submitted the following practice paper for the FLANZ conference held earlier this year: https://goo.gl/EUL6iv . Lachie is based in Whakatane, and we worked collaboratively online, to create the presentation, ready for April 12th. Unfortunately, the night before we were due to fly down to Palmerston North, our flights were cancelled, and we desperately needed a PLAN B. Luckily, the conference was for Flexible Learning Association of NZ ( FLANZ ) - making ako accessible for all. To Infinity & Beyond... Our colleague, Dr Lachlan McLaren was able to set us up with a Skype connection, and we were able to beam in from our lounge.
